Darkroom Notes: Introduction to Film Development Recipes

Welcome to Darkroom Notes!

This is a new series where I’ll be documenting my journey through film development, sharing the recipes, techniques, and results from my darkroom sessions.

What to Expect

In this series, I’ll be sharing:

  • Development recipes for various film stocks and developers
  • Process notes including timing, temperatures, and agitation patterns
  • Results and observations from each development session
  • Tips and techniques learned along the way
  • Equipment reviews and darkroom setup insights

Why Document This?

Film photography is as much about the process as it is about the final image. Each combination of film stock, developer, and technique produces unique characteristics - grain structure, contrast, tonality. By documenting these recipes and their results, I’m building a reference that will help me (and hopefully you) achieve consistent, intentional results in the darkroom.

The Format

Each Darkroom Notes post will follow a consistent structure:

  • Film Stock: What film was developed
  • Developer: The chemistry used
  • Recipe: Dilution ratios, timing, temperature
  • Process: Step-by-step development notes
  • Results: How the negatives turned out
  • Notes: Observations and adjustments for next time

Coming Up

The next few posts will cover:

  • AristaPan 100 development with Arista Premium F76 Plus
  • Experimenting with different film stocks and developer combinations
  • Push/pull processing techniques for challenging lighting conditions

Whether you’re just starting with film development or you’re a seasoned darkroom veteran, I hope these notes will be useful. Feel free to reach out with your own experiences and recipes!
